Handwriting gives a mechanical pencil a different job from drawing against a ruler. The point repeatedly touches and leaves the page, a flattened edge can make letters broader, and heavy pressure can snap thin lead. These four 0.5 mm pencils address different interruptions. None combines every mechanism, so the useful question is which annoyance actually slows you down.
| Pencil | What it changes | What it does not do |
|---|---|---|
| Uni Kuru Toga Roulette | Rotates lead between strokes | Does not cushion heavy pressure |
| Uni Kuru Toga Advance Upgrade | Rotates lead faster, with a sliding sleeve | Does not automatically feed lead like the Nero |
| Zebra DelGuard | Cushions lead against pressure | Does not rotate lead |
| Pentel Orenz Nero | Automatically feeds lead after the first click | Does not rotate lead |
For a more even line: Uni Kuru Toga Roulette
The Kuru Toga engine turns the lead in small steps when the pencil is pressed and lifted. That can prevent the broad, one-sided edge that develops when a writer holds an ordinary pencil at the same angle for pages of notes. The Roulette places a knurled metal grip near the point, giving a familiar textured hold. Its rotation has many opportunities to work in short handwriting strokes. It has fewer opportunities during a single uninterrupted line, so it is not the same answer for every drawing style. Uni describes the rotating-lead principle for the range.
Uni Kuru Toga Roulette 0.5 mm, gun metallic

Mechanism: Lead rotates during writing
Grip: Knurled metal
Lead: 0.5 mm
For longer letter strokes: Uni Kuru Toga Advance Upgrade
The Advance Upgrade keeps lead rotation but uses Uni’s faster W Speed engine. In Uni’s product announcement, the company says the 20-tooth engine turns the lead twice as fast as a standard Kuru Toga. That is a relevant distinction for longer strokes in English letters, where a slower engine gets fewer lifts to work with. The Advance Upgrade also has a punched metal grip and sliding sleeve, so it feels and presents the point differently from the Roulette. If the standard rotation already keeps your lines even, there may be no reason to change pencils merely for the faster mechanism.
Uni Kuru Toga Advance Upgrade 0.5 mm, gun metallic

Mechanism: W Speed rotating lead
Grip: Metal punched grip
Lead: 0.5 mm
For frequent snapped lead: Zebra DelGuard
The DelGuard’s double-spring system responds to pressure straight down and at an angle. It is the option to examine when snapped lead interrupts a heavy-handed writer. It uses a textured grip and keeps an eraser beneath the cap. This is lead protection, not point maintenance: an exposed lead edge can still wear into a wedge. If that is your main complaint, the two Uni pencils above address it more directly. The Roulette vs DelGuard article looks at those two problems side by side.
Zebra DelGuard 0.5 mm, black (P-MA85-BK)

Mechanism: Dual-spring lead protection
Grip: Textured
Lead: 0.5 mm
For fewer clicks: Pentel Orenz Nero
Pentel says the Orenz Nero needs one initial click, then advances lead automatically as writing continues. Its metal sleeve slides back as the lead is used. This is a different system from the Kuru Toga’s rotation and the DelGuard’s spring protection. It suits a writer frustrated by stopping to press the top of the pencil. The trade-off is a more elaborate tip that works close to the paper; whether you like that contact is a matter of writing angle and feel. The linked PP3005-A model is the 0.5 mm version, rather than the thinner 0.2 or 0.3 mm Nero models.
Pentel Orenz Nero 0.5 mm (PP3005-A)

Feed: Automatic after first click
Sleeve: Slides back as lead wears
Lead: 0.5 mm
Match the mechanism to the interruption
If a line grows broad as you write, start with the Roulette; consider the Advance Upgrade if its faster rotation and different grip appeal to you. If lead breaks before it wears down, start with the DelGuard. If clicking interrupts long note-taking, the Orenz Nero offers a genuine alternative. There is no need to buy a more complex mechanism if your current pencil already holds a comfortable line. Check the exact model and lead size before ordering: the names Kuru Toga, DelGuard and Orenz cover multiple variants with different tips and bodies.
